Let’s be straightforward about what this page is: White Sulphur Springs, Montana, has no developed climbing in town, and no documented crag turned up for either of the two other places the original research brief pointed toward — Kings Hill and the Little Belt Mountains north on US-89 (home to the Showdown ski area), or the Sixteen Mile area south toward the Bridgers. Both read, in the sources available, as scenic, hiking and skiing country rather than climbing destinations. That absence isn’t proof nothing is there — only that nothing surfaced in this research pass, and it should not be treated as the final word.

What is real and documented is the Castle Mountains, a range just southeast of town, reached off US-12 on the range’s north side. Elk Peak, the high point at 8,589 feet, gives the range its name — craggy spires jutting from the summits, granite on the west side and, per one source, “some of Montana’s best limestone” to the east. Three developed areas are named on the record: Grasshopper, Limestone Ridge, and Green Canyon, the last of which is the most developed of the three with roughly 40 routes, some already bolted. Development here is credited mainly to Ron and Gerald Brunckhorst and their circle, and Ron Brunckhorst wrote the area’s only known guidebook.

The rock

The Castles are two rocks half an hour apart, and the geology explains both the shape of the range and its name. The eastern side is dry, porous limestone hills; the western slopes carry the “castle turrets,” fifty-foot igneous spires that gave the range its name. In between sat the Castle Mountain mining district — lead, silver and copper — which is the classic signature of a hot intrusion emplaced into carbonate country rock, because replacement ore bodies form exactly at that contact.

So: an intrusive centre punched into a Paleozoic carbonate section, the intrusive rock standing as spires on the west, the limestone weathering into hills on the east. That reading rests on the described landscape, on the replacement ore district, and on the regional pattern of shallow Late Cretaceous-to-Eocene stocks and laccoliths scattered across central Montana — the Crazies, the Little Belts, the Highwoods, the Judiths, all part of one Challis-age flare-up. The specific pluton, its composition and its age are unverified, and the climbers’ “granite” should be read as a field term rather than a mapped one: in this part of Montana the intrusive rock is as likely to be syenite, monzonite, diorite or quartz monzonite as true granite.

That split runs straight through the climbing. Grasshopper Rocks is mostly spires on the western side — joint-bounded remnants of a shallow intrusion, left standing as the softer cover weathered off them — with small pockets of bolted limestone and bolted granite lines but “most routes trad or mixed protection,” which is precisely what joint-bounded intrusive turrets give you: crack and mixed climbing on coarse, joint-defined faces, with grussy tops and short walk-offs. Limestone Ridge is named for its rock, on the carbonate side. And Green Canyon is limestone too — “dry, porous” being a description of karst, and karst meaning pockets.

Which is where this page gets its one real correction. Green Canyon is now sourced as “one of the prettiest limestone climbing destinations in the state,” with over 40 developed routes from 5.4 to 5.12b — a moderate-heavy limestone sport venue, and the first hard number this chapter has ever had. The formation is still unverified: both the Little Belt and Big Belt sections carry Proterozoic limestones alongside the Mississippian Madison, so a confident assignment cannot be made from here.

Why this page is mostly blank, on purpose

We looked for route names, grades, lengths and star ratings for the Castle Mountains and found almost none that would survive being printed. The geology pass moved the line a little — Green Canyon’s 40-plus routes from 5.4 to 5.12b are now sourced, and that is enough to say a moderate climber has a reason to drive here — but not a single route name with a grade attached has surfaced for any of the three areas. Rather than invent a chosen-moderates table to match the shape of every other page in this book, we are leaving it out and saying so directly: this is still the thinnest-documented area in the Corridor, and what belongs here is a season of fieldwork, not a guess dressed up as data. If you climb here before we do, we would genuinely like to hear about it.

Season & logistics

No sourced information exists yet on season, camping, or land ownership for the Castle Mountains climbing areas — access runs via US-12 on the range’s north side, east of White Sulphur Springs, but whether that land is National Forest, state, or private was not confirmed in this research pass, and neither were any seasonal closures. A summer-through-early-fall window is a reasonable guess by analogy to other central-Montana ranges at similar elevation, but it is exactly that: a guess, not a sourced fact. White Sulphur Springs itself is the nearest town for lodging and food.

The book to buy

Ron Brunckhorst, The Big Empty — the guidebook to the Castle Mountains, reportedly sold at Base Camp in Helena and Spire Climbing Center in Bozeman; its edition, printing date and page count are unverified, so call ahead before making a special trip for it. Start with Mountain Project’s Castle Mountains area page — thin as it is, it’s the best available online record — and treat any land-manager or access information you find locally as more current than anything printed here.
