Luna Park lies north and west of Truth or Consequences, out in Forest Service country toward the Black Range and the edge of the Gila, and Mountain Project sums it up as mostly moderate sport climbing on quality volcanic rock. It shares a road network with Red Rock Arroyo and, unusually for this county, comes with its own small campground — which makes it the easiest weekend destination we have found here despite being the farthest from town. Three moderates at 5.7–5.8 sit on a longer bolted flat face; the rest of the crag runs 5.9–5.11, and the longest lines are on the buttress left of the slot. A further sub-area, Upper Park, sits above the main crag. The route names that have surfaced — Man in the Moon, Giant Leap, Luna Barr, and one climb bolted, apparently without irony, as “Clever Lunar-Themed Route Name” — read like the work of one developer with a running joke, and finding that person is on our list.

The rock
The blank in this page’s stat block is filled. The rock at Luna Park is rhyolite — a climbing source describes the area as a well-established venue just south of the San Mateo Mountains with trad, sport and mixed climbing on rhyolite — and the campground’s coordinates (roughly 33.496 N, −107.415 W, 6,837 ft) put the crag on the southern flank of the San Mateo Mountains, not the Black Range: an isolated, north-trending, eastward-tilted structural block in the northeastern corner of the Mogollon–Datil volcanic field. Those coordinates also correct the land manager below — this is Cibola National Forest, Magdalena Ranger District, the district that administers the San Mateos, not the Gila.
The southern San Mateos are built out of the Nogal Canyon caldera, which erupted at 28.4 Ma. Its signature unit is the Vicks Peak Tuff — a densely to partially welded, crystal-poor, quartz-poor rhyolite ash-flow tuff, 28.5 Ma, from nothing to 800 feet thick — overlain by the Springtime Canyon Formation of rhyolite and quartz latite flows and tuffs erupted along the caldera’s eastern margin, and underlain by the andesitic Spears Formation. Luna Park’s rhyolite is most likely Vicks Peak or a Springtime Canyon unit, ~29–28 Ma. That is an inference from position and from published mapping of the range, not a sheet read at the crag; the relevant quadrangle appears to be Sierra Fijardo (NMBGMR GM-87), unread here.
A densely welded ash-flow tuff is nothing like the soft Bandelier tuff of the Jemez, and the difference is welding. Within a single cooling unit the base is poorly welded and crumbly, the middle is densely welded and hard, and the top devitrifies and recrystallises — so rock quality changes with height on the wall in bands, not at random, and the cliff bands themselves are where the densely welded zone crops out. Crystal-poor rock means few phenocryst knobs to pull on; holds come instead from flattened pumice weathering out as pockets and slots, from vapour-phase cavities and lithophysae, and from the jointing — which is what the reported architecture here, a long bolted flat face with the longer lines on a buttress left of a slot, actually describes. Friction on welded tuff is generally excellent, though a fresh surface sheds grit until traffic cleans it. Bolts hold well in the densely welded band and poorly in the soft one; chain anchors throughout suggest a developer who was working in the good rock.
Season & access
Season is no longer a guess, though: the window runs mid-March through May, and again September through mid-November — shoulder seasons, the mirror image of the winter limestone at Mud Mountain and Caballo Lake, and a structural fact worth building a trip calendar around. Access runs by way of Forest Service roads on the Cibola National Forest, Magdalena Ranger District — our earlier “likely Gila” was wrong, and the campground’s coordinates settle it; forest roads out here are also subject to fire closures and monsoon washouts, so check current conditions before you drive out. Camping is a small three-site USFS campground right at the crag — no water, so bring your own.
Approach
The approach is now confirmed from two directions. From the south, take FR 225 by way of FR 139 out of Monticello. From the north, FR 139 leaves the I-25 west frontage road roughly five miles south of Exit 100 (Red Rock). An earlier approach text in our notes — east from I-25 Exit 115 on Forest Service Road #1, then south and west on FSR #225 — no longer looks reliable next to this and may have been a conflation with a different route in; treat the two directions above as the ones to drive.

Zero Gravity, once listed here on a weak assignment, is now placed at Caballo Lake & the Bat Cave instead — the fuller record has it starting left of Astrobunnies, somewhere in that area. Grades, stars and lengths are still unrecorded for most of the lines above; “mostly moderate” — now sharpened to a 5.7–5.11 range — is what the record offers until we climb here ourselves.
