Red Rock Arroyo
Several small volcanic crags scattered around Luna Park, where the colour of the rock tells you whether to climb it.

Red Rock Arroyo is no longer quite the blank page it was. It is several smaller crags, both uphill and downhill of Luna Park, northeast of Monticello off Forest Service Road #225, on the Cibola National Forest — and the rock, a source finally tells us, is volcanic and “can be super (darker red) to rubbish (lighter buff).” One sentence, three facts: the stone is volcanic, the name is descriptive rather than decorative, and the good rock is literally the red rock. Route counts, grades, style and season are still unrecorded, and this page stays a scaffold — but it is a scaffold with a rock type on it now.

Approach
Two approaches survive in the record, from opposite ends of the same Forest Service road network — the crags sit along FR #225. From the south, Forest Service Road #139 runs in from Monticello. From the north, it leaves the I-25 west frontage road roughly five miles south of Exit 100 (Red Rock). A third approach text, describing a route from Exit 115 to the Luna Park campground, appears to belong to Luna Park rather than here and may have been conflated with it in the source — treat it as Luna Park’s, not this area’s. No GPS coordinates, foot approach, or vehicle requirement have been recovered for either FSR #139 approach; read the area page directly before you drive out.
The rock — read the colour
Sharing a road, a forest and a hillside with Luna Park almost certainly means sharing a geology. Luna Park sits on the southern flank of the San Mateo Mountains, on rhyolite of the Nogal Canyon caldera system — the 28.5 Ma Vicks Peak Tuff and the Springtime Canyon rhyolites above it. Red Rock Arroyo’s crags are the same hillside’s outcrops, and we take them to be the same ash-flow sequence, ~29–28 Ma. That is an inference from adjacency and regional mapping, not a mapped determination; the sheet to open is Sierra Fijardo (NMBGMR GM-87).
The red-versus-buff split almost certainly tracks welding and devitrification inside a cooling unit. An ash-flow tuff cools in bands: the middle of the sheet welds densely, oxidises and recrystallises in the vapour phase, and comes out hard, dark and often distinctly red; the top and bottom of the same sheet cool too fast to weld properly and stay soft, pale and vitric. Comparable red zones are mapped in this volcanic field — at Chupadera Peak near Socorro, 60-metre craggy cliffs mark an unusually thick dusky-red lithophysal zone in the basal densely welded La Jencia Tuff.
So the practical rule at Red Rock Arroyo is the one the source already gives you, with a reason attached: climb the red, distrust the buff. On poorly welded buff tuff, holds snap off, bolts loosen in their holes over the years, and the rock softens when it is wet.
What is still not known
Climbing style — sport, trad, bouldering, or some mix — route count, grade range, cliff height, aspect, season and development history are all still unrecorded, and it is not established how much roped climbing these crags actually hold. The ranger district is now known (Magdalena); permits, closures and the foot approach from FR #225 are not.
Routes
No route names, grades, or types have surfaced for Red Rock Arroyo in any source we could reach. The table stays empty rather than guessed.
